Driving Your Own Car

1. Each day, you're driving down the highway of life. Do you know where you're going? You should, because that's the reason you're on the road. You have a reason to be driving on the highway and there is a destination you're headed toward. But the destination is not as important as how you take the journey. The journey is better when you keep your eyes on the road ahead. This is equivalent to being present and focusing on the moment you are in right now. All kinds of negative things can happen if you don't keep your eyes on (the present) the road. You can crash into the car in front of you or an obstacle in the road. If the road bends, and you're not aware of it, you go off the road. Staying on the road is the most important thing while driving. Being in the present moment is the most important thing you can do in life. 2. Notice the rear view mirror right in front of you? It is useful to look into it when reversing but it is not as useful when you're on the highway. When you keep looking through the rear view mirror, you do not pay attention to what is happening in front of you. The rear view mirror is like looking into your past. It is not of much value to you and it can actually be dangerous to your health. Looking into the past stops you from being aware of what is happening right now. Don't keep looking at the rear view mirror or the past. Staying on the road is the most important thing you can be doing while driving, remember? 3. Your hands should be on the steering wheel while you're driving. If you use the steering wheel properly you can stay on the road. The steering wheel is like your mind. If you are not concentrating on the present moment because your thinking is distracting your awareness, you could be headed for an accident. Thinking really does not help you while you're driving. It actually distracts you from what is important to you right now. This is true in life as well. Your thinking becomes a distraction, when it is not focused on the present moment. If you take your mind off the road, you let go of the steering wheel of life and before you know it, you find yourself off the road. 4. Remember the case of flat tyres? Handling a flat tyre is the same as handling the problems that happen in your life. Do you complain about it, or do you do something about it. If you become angry that you got a flat, you may step out of the car and rant and rave while standing in the highway looking at your flat tyre. This is dangerous because another car can hit you. Remember that it happened already. To fix a flat tyre you have lots of choices available to you, getting mad is not your best choice. You can pick up the phone and call for help (like I would J), or you can change the tyre yourself! 5. How about speeding? Speeding is similar to keeping up with the Joneses. You may not be able to afford the ‘speeding tickets’ or the loss of your license. Trying to keep up with others is not worth the risk of losing what you have. Use your brakes when you need to slow down. This is true in life as well. We have to learn how to put the brakes on some things in our life so we don't burn ourselves out going too fast. If you are a good driver, you won't drive yourself crazy. And that goes for every aspect of your life, including Living it!

Harnessing the Demographic Dividends Through Investments in Youth

African Presidents convened in Addis Ababa from 28th January to discuss the continents economic progress. The African Union (AU) has chosen 2017 to be the year of the African youth and dedicated the theme for the summit “Harnessing the Demographic Dividends through Investments in Youth” to young people. Demographic dividend according to the United Nations Population Fund is the economic growth potential that can result from a change in a population’s age structure. This happens when the share of the working-age population (15 to 64) is larger than the non-working-age population (14 and younger, as well as 65 and older). The central importance of the demographic dividend to Africa’s transformative development has been repeatedly acknowledged by African leaders at the highest level and in key ministerial platforms. If Africa is to rise, then she has to invest in the youth of her member countries . Evidence from the last ten years has shown that a demographic dividend lens is a strate...

7 Things I Learned on My First Week of FK Exchange

1. Uganda truly is the Pearl of Africa - Such a beautiful country, very green, lots of fresh air in the capital city (Yes Nairobi, it is possible to have fresh air in a capital city). I stay in a very nice neighbourhood with a pleasant view and lots of friendly neighbors. 2. I have the best of friends in my FK colleagues based in Uganda. - It's been only a week but we've made an effort to visit each other and find out where each of us lives. We also have a very active whatsapp group and whenever they  don't hear from you they will make an effort to call you and find out if you're okay. Ps- The outgoing FK fellows In Uganda are throwing us a "Welcome to Uganda" party ...and no, you're not invited coz you're not cool like us 😉 3. Luganda (Language of Uganda) is very easy to learn - Thanks to my awesome tutor, I already know how to greet people, call for a taxi and even shop for basics at the local market. The Germanization of English!(maybe it could be easier if we all spoke this way!)

"The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility." As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English". In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c".. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f".. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible...
